Walking the Lycian Way Near Kaş

Sea-view trails, ancient ruins and a coastline made for walking — how to enjoy the Lycian Way around Kaş, then cool off with a swim.

Quick answer

The Lycian Way is a 540 km waymarked trail that passes right through Kaş. Best short walks near town: Kaş to Liman Ağzı (5 km, 2-3 hours, ends at swim bays), the Çukurbağ peninsula loop (6 km), and the steep climb to ancient Phellos above Kaş (3 hours one way). Go in spring or autumn; bring sturdy shoes, 2 L water and swimwear for the finish.

The Lycian Way — one of the world's great long-distance trails — threads right past Kaş, linking ancient cities, pine-scented ridges and turquoise coves. You don't need to hike all 540 km to enjoy it: here are the best short sections near Kaş.

From Kaş, easy half-day stretches lead out along the Çukurbağ peninsula and towards the cove of Liman Ağzı, with the sea glittering below the whole way. Further afield, the trail links Lycian sites like Phellos above Kaş and the coastline around Kekova — big views, modest effort.

Walk, then swim

The magic of walking here is ending at the water. Many trails finish at a swimmable cove — Liman Ağzı even has a couple of simple cafés. For a perfect day, walk one way along the coast and have a boat collect you, or combine a morning hike with an afternoon bays-and-snorkel cruise.

When to go & what to bring

When to go & what to bring

Spring (April–May) and autumn (October) are ideal, with mild temperatures and wildflowers; high summer is best kept to early mornings and shorter coastal sections. Bring sturdy shoes, plenty of water, sun protection, a hat and swimwear — and download an offline map of the route.

Three favourite half-day sections in detail

1) Kaş to Liman Ağzı: roughly 5 km along the coast, 2 to 3 hours, mostly flat with one short climb. Ends at swimming bays with cafés. 2) Çukurbağ peninsula loop: 6 km, 2.5 hours, sea views in every direction; start and end at the same point so no logistics. 3) Bezirgan plateau down to Kalkan: 12 km, half-day with a real descent, ancient threshing floors, mountain villages — one-way, so arrange a taxi at the end. All three are signposted with the Lycian Way's red-and-white waymarks.

Phellos: the Lycian city above Kaş

Phellos: the Lycian city above Kaş

Few people know that Kaş itself was once Antiphellos — the harbour town of Phellos, perched in the mountains 600 metres above. The ruined city is reachable in a steep 3-hour climb (one way) on the Lycian Way north out of Kaş, through pine forest and past Lycian rock tombs carved into the cliff. It's quiet, hardly visited, and offers stunning views back down to the harbour and Meis island. Best done in spring and autumn; carry 2 litres of water per person and start before 09:00 in summer.

Safety, navigation and what could go wrong

The trail is well-marked but not patrolled. Carry a paper or offline map (Maps.me, Locus, or OsmAnd — the Lycian Way is in the OpenStreetMap layer); phone signal is patchy in valleys. Stick to the red-and-white blazes painted on rocks and trees; if you've gone 15 minutes without seeing one, turn back. In summer, the biggest risk is heat — start early, finish by midday, drink before you're thirsty. There are no bears or wolves on the coastal sections, but watch for snakes and free-roaming goats and dogs.

Guided walks and supported trekking

Guided walks and supported trekking

If you'd rather not navigate, several Kaş-based outfitters run guided half-day and full-day walks for €40 ‑ €75 per person including transfers and lunch. For multi-day Lycian Way trekking, a supported tour means you walk light while your bag travels by van between village guesthouses; expect €80 ‑ €130 per night including bag transfer, breakfast and dinner. We can recommend the operators we've used personally.
