Kaş and Kalkan sit just 30 minutes apart on the Turquoise Coast, and travellers often wonder which to base themselves in. Both are lovely; they simply suit different moods. Here's an honest comparison to help you decide.
Atmosphere and who they suit

Kaş has a bohemian, laid-back feel — cobbled lanes, cafés, divers and a young-at-heart crowd. Kalkan is more polished and romantic, known for its hillside villas, smart restaurants and beach clubs. Choose Kaş for character, activities and value; choose Kalkan for a quieter, upmarket escape.
Beaches and boat trips
Neither town has a big sandy beach in the centre — both use beach clubs and swimming platforms, with stunning Kaputaş Beach roughly between them. For boat trips, Kaş is the better base: it's the classic departure point for Kekova sunken city tours, the Blue Cave and island bays. Many Kalkan visitors come to Kaş for the day to take a boat trip.
Day trips and what's nearby

Kaş wins on day-trip variety thanks to its position. Kekova and the sunken city sit a 90 minute drive east, Saklıkent Gorge and Patara Beach are within 45 minutes, and the Lycian Way passes right through town. Kalkan is closer to Patara (about 20 minutes) but further from Kekova, which is the gateway to most of the best Kaş boat trips. If your itinerary leans towards beaches and Patara, either base works. If Kekova, diving or the Blue Cave are the headline plans, Kaş saves hours of driving every morning.
Restaurants, bars and evenings
Both towns punch above their size on food, but in different ways. Kaş has a creative independent scene with meyhanes, Lycian fusion small plates, and a cluster of low-key wine bars in the old town. Evenings spill out onto the cobbled streets around the mosque. Kalkan's strength is destination dining: rooftop terraces with floodlit views of the harbour, smart Mediterranean kitchens with longer wine lists. Nightlife is gentle in both, neither is a party town. For a romantic candlelit dinner, Kalkan edges ahead. For variety on a friendly budget, Kaş wins.
Cost and value

Kalkan is the pricier base. Villas with private pools push high season nightly rates well past Kaş equivalents, and restaurants run roughly 25 to 40 percent higher for similar food. Kaş has a wider range, from family run pansiyons to boutique sea view hotels, and shared boat tours, taxis and meals all come in noticeably cheaper. Couples upgrading for a once a year villa week often pick Kalkan. Longer stays, families, divers and groups almost always find Kaş the better value.
Getting there and getting around
Both towns share the same approach. Most visitors fly into Antalya airport (Dalaman also works), then transfer about 3.5 hours by private car or 4 hours by bus. The road into Kaş drops you straight into the centre. Kalkan sits a few kilometres up from the coast on a steep hillside, so factor in walking up and down (or local taxis) once you arrive. Within town, both are walkable. To hop between them, dolmuş minibuses run roughly every 30 minutes and take about 35 minutes.
